Recently my husband and I moved from the city into the countryside.
We bought our first home on a narrow, 5-acre farm connected to a forest.
In our new home, we first noticed and appreciated these things: how quiet it was and how much more we are surrounded by nature.
We often take long walks through the woods in our yard or nearby preserves. It is here, in nature’s embrace, that I’ve discovered the profound power of gratitude.
It begins with the simplest things—a gentle breeze rustling the leaves, a caterpillar inching across the path, deer eating our fallen pears and apples, or a vivid pelt of moss growing on a tree branch.
These nature walks have become my lifeline, a refuge from the shadowy thoughts that creep into my mind, threatening to drown me in darkness.
Each small moment with nature fills me with awe and wonder, reminding me that beauty exists in chaos and life is worth living.
I try to bring that solace into painting. I express my gratitude for the moments that pull me from despair and fill me with hope.
Painting transforms the fleeting beauty of life and the feeling of gratitude into something tangible that I can share with others.
Night Encounters: Animal Friends
My Night Encounters: Animal Friends Collection emerged from this well of gratitude.
Each panel depicts a peaceful encounter with wildlife—animals I’ve never personally seen outside of zoos, but long to protect.
The vibrant blues, purples, and deep blacks of the night sky envelop starry luminaries. The animals’ forms are bathed in the soft glow of starlight as they carry on, disarmed, with their natural patterns.
These paintings are a tribute to the beauty of life and a hope for a future where humans and animals can coexist in harmony.
When painting this series, I reflected on these questions: how often do we have the opportunity to appreciate the stars above? How often do we get to see the animals that share our world?
My paintings are more than depictions of nature; they are a celebration of life and a reminder that every small moment with nature can illuminate even the darkest paths.
In that illumination, however brief, there is enough reason to keep going.
I hope that these night encounters with animals touch and open your heart, mind, and spirit the way they do for me

About Gabrielle
Gabrielle is a visual creative based near Flint, MI. She has shown internationally, and has experience working as a designer and illustrator in freelance and in-house design for B2B clients and studios. She also has experience teaching art and oil painting to youth and adults.
She graduated in 2020 with a B.F.A. in Illustration from College for Creative Studies. In 2018, she studied oil painting in Florence, Italy at the Florence Academy of Art under the instruction of Jura Bedic.
She enjoys working in a variety of styles, mediums, and subject matters, from digital illustration to large-scale figurative and landscape oil paintings.
She loves the freedom to experiment with her work. She is always excited to discover new ways of connecting with others through art.
In her free time, she loves to paint en plein air, go on nature walks with her husband, and curl up with a good book with her six cats.
